Lewis J. Ridley
What’s on your mind? Whether it’s a clinical question, a common philosophical problem, or a weird linguistic question you can’t stop thinking about, I would love to try to answer it either on Substack or my next video. I love exploring these sorts of rabbit holes.
About Lewis
I offer comprehensive speech pathology care across both public and private settings, serving acute, chronic, and community patients. As a Generalist Clinician, I possess extensive experience across the lifespan, treating pediatric speech and language needs, as well as complex communication and swallowing needs in adults, including those with neurodegenerative conditions and end-of-life hospital care.
My foundation is built upon a Master of Speech Pathology and a rigorous background in Linguistics and Japanese. This intersection of disciplines ensures a holistic and deeply informed approach to complex clinical challenges such as dysarthria, aphasia, dysphagia, phonological disorders, and language disorders.
I am committed to advancing our understanding of how linguistic structures map onto neurological realities. My future ambition is to pursue a PhD focused on the intrinsic connections between language and the brain. Through research, university teaching, and public discussion on linguistic philosophy, I aim to clarify how we conceptualize and rehabilitate human expression.
Core Clinical Competencies
- Pediatric Speech & Language
- Adult Dysphagia & Swallowing
- Neurogenic Communication (Aphasia)
- Motor Speech Disorders (Dysarthria)
Theoretical Inquiries
An evolving ledger of research questions exploring the intersection of linguistic philosophy and clinical speech pathology.
Wittgenstein's Language Games in Aphasia Rehabilitation
Investigating how Ludwig Wittgenstein's later philosophy of "meaning as use" can redefine therapeutic targets for neurogenic communication disorders. If language is fundamentally a social activity governed by rules in specific contexts, how must our clinical assessments evolve beyond isolated word-retrieval tasks?
Embodied Cognition and Metaphorical Structures
Drawing heavily upon Lakoff and Johnson's *Metaphors We Live By*, this inquiry explores how conceptual metaphors physically structure our comprehension of reality. How does neurological damage impact a patient's capacity to process spatial metaphors, and can embodied therapies bypass damaged neural pathways?
Information for Academic Supervisors
I am actively seeking PhD supervision to formally investigate the neurological and clinical implications of structural linguistics.

Now: Immediate Pursuits
A snapshot of what I am actively reading, researching, and focusing on right now.
Linguistic Inquiry
Currently analyzing the intersection of embodied cognition and adult dysphagia rehabilitation. Reviewing Lakoff's models of spatial mapping to see if metaphorical understanding can bypass damaged neural pathways in motor speech execution.
Digital Architecture
Transitioning my personal knowledge management system into a robust, interconnected digital garden. Establishing this site as a centralized node for essays, clinical frameworks, and podcast infrastructure.
Physical Benchmarks
Maintaining a rigorous physical regimen to support cognitive endurance. Currently targeting specific strength benchmarks in compound lifts while balancing cardiovascular recovery protocols.
